Effective leadership and management in the health care system has an impact on patient experience. As per a recommendation from High Quality Care for All, the final report of the NHS Next Stage Review, the National Leadership Council (NLC) was set up to champion the transformation of leadership across the NHS. The NLC's vision is ‘An NHS with outstanding leadership and leadership development at every level to ensure high quality care for all’.
The Department is also introducing a more systematic approach to talent and leadership in the NHS to ensure it is spoilt for choice when appointing leaders to senior management roles and that those leaders are more representative of the communities they serve. Inspiring Leaders: Leadership for Quality was issued to Strategic Health Authorities in January to give them a framework to develop talent and leadership plans.
The National Leadership Council (NLC) has been created to underpin and champion the new priority being attached to leadership in the NHS, to ensure that the system supports high quality leadership. The overall purpose of the NLC is to enable the transformation of leadership capacity and capability throughout the system.
Following the overwhelming success of last year’s inaugural NHS Leadership Awards, the most prestigious health awards in the country return with the launch of the 2010 nominations website.
This is the first national guidance on talent and leadership planning for the NHS. Strategic health authorities (SHAs) have a key role to play in fostering investment and collaboration so that the right conditions are in place for improving talent and leadership development. The guidance has been designed with four SHA health economies and system-wide engagement to provide a framework for developing talent and leadership plans.
